Frost Protection: Keeping Your Boiler Running in Winter

A frozen condensate pipe is the number one cause of boiler breakdowns during winter. The condensate pipe carries acidic water produced during normal operation from the boiler to an external drain. When temperatures drop below freezing, this pipe can ice up and block, causing the boiler to lock out with an EA error code. A few simple precautions will keep your HeatCore C1 running reliably through the coldest months.

What you'll need

Steps

  1. Never turn the boiler off completely in winter. Use the frost protection or holiday mode instead. On the HeatCore C1, this keeps the internal pump and primary circuit ticking over at low level, preventing the boiler itself and nearby pipework from freezing.
  2. Insulate the condensate pipe if it runs externally. Trace the white or grey plastic pipe from the bottom of the boiler to where it enters the drain. Wrap any external sections — including bends, elbows, and the open end — with foam pipe insulation. Secure the lagging with cable ties or waterproof tape.
  3. If the boiler shows an EA error in freezing weather, thaw the condensate pipe. Pour warm (not boiling) water slowly along the external section of the pipe, starting from the end nearest the drain and working back towards the boiler. For bends and low points where ice tends to collect, hold a warm cloth against the pipe for a few minutes until the blockage clears.
  4. Reset the boiler after thawing. Once the condensate pipe is clear, press the reset button on the HeatCore C1 display. The boiler should fire up within a few minutes. If the EA error returns, the pipe may still be partially blocked — repeat the thawing process.
  5. Set the heating to at least 10 °C minimum when you are away. If you are leaving the house unoccupied during cold weather, do not switch the heating off entirely. Set the thermostat to a minimum of 10 °C to keep the system circulating and prevent both the condensate pipe and your internal pipework from freezing.

Important: NEVER pour boiling water directly onto a frozen condensate pipe. The sudden thermal shock can crack the plastic pipe or loosen cemented joints. Always use warm water — hot tap temperature is sufficient to melt the ice gradually and safely.

Tips

Keep a trickle of heating running overnight during severe cold spells — even a low flow temperature will prevent the condensate from freezing in the pipe. Ask your installer to check the condensate pipe route at your next service; shorter, steeper runs with fewer bends are far less likely to freeze. If your boiler suffers from persistent freezing, consider asking your installer about rerouting the condensate pipe to an internal drain — this eliminates the problem entirely.
